Citing unilateral decision-making, organizational disorder, and deviation from core principles, over a hundred leaders and activists of Gono Adhikar Parishad—including members of its district, youth, student, and labour wings—resigned from the party on Friday (June 20).

At a press conference held in the Sajiara area of Magura town, the resigning members formally announced their departure from the party. Present at the event were members from various tiers of the district and youth wings of Gono Adhikar Parishad.

A written statement was read out by Md. Russell Majumder, current vice-president of the party’s Magura district committee. Other notable attendees included Md. Majedul Haque, human rights secretary of the district committee; Md. Imamul Molla, finance secretary of the youth wing; and Pallab Biswas, former finance secretary of the student wing, among others.

The leaders alleged that the central leadership of Gono Adhikar Parishad has been taking decisions unilaterally, appointing controversial figures to key posts, and ignoring grassroots opinions. They further criticized what they described as “self-centered and publicity-driven politics” that undermines the party’s original ideals.

They claimed the party has shifted from grassroots political activism to personality-centered promotion, straying far from its original mission of youth empowerment and democratic values.

“We are not joining any other political platform at the moment,” the statement read. “Rather, we aim to pursue a new form of politics—democratic, tolerant, and inclusive—built on the values of responsibility and accountability.”

The resigning leaders asserted that their exit includes eight current members of the district committee as well as numerous leaders from the youth, student, and labour wings, amounting to over 100 individuals.

Party insiders confirmed growing discontent, particularly over the recently formed district youth and student wing committees, which they claimed were finalized without local consultation.

When contacted, Md. Borkot Ali, president of the Gono Adhikar Parishad’s Magura district committee, told Dainik Magura on Friday evening, “I have heard that some leaders have resigned, but they did not discuss this with us beforehand. The new youth and student committees were appointed by the central leadership. If they had any reservations, they should have abided by party discipline.”
